To death. All of the patients that I've cared for who died of post-influenza pneumonia died within 48 hours of admission. I hate to talk about it like this, because, for my personal patients, I remember each and everyone of them, their names, faces, family members. I remember their labs and what their imaging looks like. They are real people to me, and not just a number. These are people I loved.
