More than likely yes...
sure there could be something more directly related to this particular disease but it is unlikely. Negative affects aren't usually related to the disease itself being treated they're mostly side effects on the human body itself.

My aunt had a minor illness and was prescribed Chloramphenicol which killed her. Other children were also killed.

Safe use is surely important. Some risks are set aside when time is of the essence, which many have felt was the case.
