Sensitive to your family situation but you may be missing the argument
If I or a family member is suffering from COVID, and the doctor says he can't do anything to treat the infection, but he can be reactive to the symptoms and hope you survive. For some patients that's okay, but not for everyone.

Compare that to the doctor saying, this is a new virus. We don't know much about it or how to treat it. We can be reactive treating your symptoms or, we can try a few proactive measures that are unproven and that come with some risks. What would you like to do?

All Trump is saying is that individuals and doctors should have the choice. Some may feel they have nothing to lose. He is not guaranteeing it or calling it a panacea as the media suggests. He's simply giving desperate patients the option.

It's the classic individual rights and urgency vs. big government controls and bureaucracy.

Followed by the other media classic of twisting the President's words and making an otherwise pragmatic approach sound crazy and out of control.

To me, it's interesting the President has put up experts who are very cautious and have spoken against this treatment and called out the lack of proven results. Trump easily could've silenced them or make them walk the company line.

He hasn't. That can be spun two different ways. He wants a fair and balanced approach with an optimistic and a pessimistic outlook. Or he's crazy. Science is preaching doom and gloom and he's naively optimistic to keep the economy going.

You can see why the media chooses the latter.

But IMO, they don't get it. He has to be hopeful otherwise the market will crash and people with panic

Be careful buying into either narrative. The President will spin to provide more hope, more options and avoid depression. The media wants him out of office and wants hysteria. But they're also currently employed, not feeling the pinch and may think they benefit from mass economic destruction.

To me, the balanced approach and allowing individual and their doctors making those decision is more practical than waiting for months and months of clinical trials. If this was a brand new drug, that's one thing...but it's been used for decades.
