there were a number of factors that contributed to 2017, some on Kalani and...
...some on Bronco, likely even some on Holmoe.

Bronco had a couple of really bad recruiting classes in a row, before he left, where the class ranking was really low but then to make it worse there were an unusually large number of washouts, guys weren't D-1 caliber players, etc so that very few players actually contributed or were productive players. KS worked at bringing in some immediate impact type players to offset that (Khiyris Tonga, Lopini Katoa, Ula Tolutau, etc) but it wasn't enough.

Holmoe was also a contributor to the problem. Based on things I've read, Holmoe hired Detmer to be the OC and asked KS if he would he accept TD as his OC (or something to that effect). This worked out well for Bronco when Holmoe hired Anae to be his OC (twice) but it didn't work out as well for Kalani. As the rumor goes, because there was so much salary committed to Detmer, there wasn't a lot left for position coaches so KS went cheap and hired friends who were former players but inexperienced as coaches (not sure how true the salary part is). Too much inexperience on the offensive staff hurt the team.
