If your stock is getting shorted, one possible conclusion is that the company is being managed poorly, which can then cause other things to happen at the operational level, especially if management is trying to react in the short-term. All indirect effects, of course.

And, of course, if someone takes a short positition, that doesn't at all mean the company is doing poorly. I am just saying that in some situations that could be the take-away.
