Going public definitely does matter. You have shareholders to answer to
Management has to make shareholders happy or they will get fired. I totally agree with you there.

But shorts are NOT shareholders. They get NO votes and they have NO say. It's possible management will feel pressured by poor stock performance and do stupid things, but that's as much about having shortsighted LONG holders as anything else.

In any case, the statement that these hedge funds "run companies into the ground" seems a far cry from whatever you're describing IMO. Thanks for responding!
