The brand is bigger than the players
The players thought the 1999 Bibs were cool. Those unis will be a stain on BYU Football until everyone who saw them is dead, and they didn't help us win a single football game or sign a single high level prospect. We aren't Oregon. We don't sign a bunch of flashy athletes and we don't have flashy facilities, so flashy uniforms really don't fit our brand.

BYU's style is much more tied to stability and tradition like a Nebraska, Wisconsin, Penn State (only in certain ways), or Michigan in terms of the type of program we run. Frankly there aren't many programs outside of the true blue bloods who have that sort of brand identity. And as an Independent our brand is the only one we can fall back on (there aren't any P12 stickers on BYU Fans' cars). When people across the country flip through games on a Saturday there is legitimate value in them immediately identifying BYU based on what we're wearing. FSU, Miami, Alabama, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, etc. may wear an alternate every once in a while, but for the most part fans across the country have associated those programs with a specific look. And when they change it up it just doesn't look right. White helmet with the Oval Y, blue jersey, and white pants at home is consistently mentioned among the best uniforms in all of CFB.

From one article:

"More than three decades removed from their successful national title bid, BYU has proven that experimentation isn’t always necessary or prudent. When you already have one of the most recognizable looks in the game, there is no reason why the Cougars ever needed to deviate."
