We live in a different CFB world than existed in '99-'04.
You're absolutely right that the decision to move away from royal to navy and every uniform decision made during that time was horrendous. But this is a different day. I was a BYU football recruit during that time and during camps, recruiting meetings, etc the uniform and brand came up zero times. Not with the coaches or the other recruits. No one cared because it wasn't a thing then. Now you hear kids talking about uniforms all the time. Zach, Dax, and our guys this season talked about it a lot. They may be responsible for the upcoming uniform tweaks, and I love it.

Also, introducing a navy helmet or a royal helmet today doesn't mean anything other than we have an option to wear it. If it falls flat it will probably never be worn again and we can all look at that game and remember the time we wore that helmet. It's not a rebranding, it's just a uniform option. If it creates buzz around the team, it was worth every penny.
