Intervention Needed
I'm not talking about letting it slide.
I just think it goes from testing to Outward Bound in a hurry, and then your relationship with that kid is probably over, which is a worse outcome than having a child who smokes pot or drinks alcohol, in my opinion.

ReyOso

I get what you are saying, and I don't want to speak for Rey, but my counterpoint is that the environment

That's kind of my feeling. No way do I want my kid smoking weed at 16.

I don't disagree with this. It's dependent on the kid and coming down hard isn't

And thinking about it better, I could see cases where testing could help.

Definitely do not disagree on the need to parent and require accountability. Is random testing the way to do that?

Horrible advice for parenting a teenager.

Kids make stupid mistakes. Some are lethal, others are merely stupid.

Sure. Don't disown your kid over it. But it's also not okay to let that stuff

What is a good solution in your opinion then?
CougarTailDevourer

There often is not a good solution for a kid going off the deep end.

Totally agree. Unless hard drugs, need a middle ground.

When my brother started out it was just alcohol and pot in his teens. This later

But if you get to the point of testing, you've already intervened, right?

They sell tests at Walmart. I've not used them though. My kid used off and on from 16-19 and the reality is, it's up

Better LSD than weed, and better weed than alcohol, according to studies.

You can take your kid to their PCP and have them order it from a lab

A friend had similar issues. His kid switched to LSD once they started testing, because LSD couldn’t be detected.

Because it's so commonly used, people forget how dangerous alcohol can be.

I was a juvenile probation officer for many years. We used urine tests.
