I was a juvenile probation officer for many years. We used urine tests.
But be careful, urine tests are fairly easy to fool. If you are going to take him to counseling I suggest talking with the counselor about it.

If your kid wants to stop including him/her in the planning process with the counselor may help. That said the counselor could offer many valuable resources and information specific for your area.

Good luck - it’s tough to overcome this stuff even with buyin from the youth.
