I believe in general the committee does a better job now than 15 years ago
Part of that is due to having better analytics available to evaluate teams, part of that is increased scrutiny by schools and the public who also have better analytics available to them.
BYU went to the committee after the 2003 tournament to find out what in the world was going on, because their seeding was so poor relative to what just about any rational analytical evaluation of that team would indicate.

Since 2007, BYU has 8 NCAA tourney trips. We have been overseeded once, “correct” seed 4 times, and underseeded 3 times.

In 2003, BYU had an RPI of 19, a Kenpom of 24 and got a 12 seed, against a UConn team that had an RPI of 28 & Kenpom 22
