(Keegan Hicks?) During Kalani’s first Spring, he was told he could choose between a full ride for education and not be on the team or he could walk on and pay his own way. Tweeting at GAs wasn’t the smartest thing to do either.
I don’t know if he decided to stay in school for free and not be on the team or transfer and play elsewhere. He clearly decided not to walk on. This idea that kids are cut and don’t get monetary benefit isn’t true. BYU is very good at honoring their word financially. There are no guarantees you stay on the team though. That’s just like other P5 conferences. Austin Lee is just one of many examples.
If BYU doesn’t see a spot for a player and said player still wants to play, then he can transfer and walk away from the free education at BYU. I’ve never heard of a situation where a kid was cut at BYU and then was left to fend for himself by staying at BYU and not getting his money. It generally only has to do with being on the team and doesn’t affect things financially (and I guess in lost free gear).
