Probably more to the story your friend doesn't understand. Pretty common for surviving spouse to get stuff.
At a minimum, have the estate there for her use during lifetime. Life estate or similar. Kids usually don't get it until his spouse at death dies. And you can;t disinherit a spouse, so there'd be an elective share option minimum for her.

So my guess is that the kid is assuming some things about the trust that aren't true.
