I'm not an attorney, but watching the contrast between one set of grandparents

who did everything through an attorney and one that didn't was instructive. There wasn't any squabbling in my family or other issues like that; however, the one that had the attorney just made everything much easier. I can't imagine how bad it could have been if survivors were in disagreement. Definitely worth a couple thousand bucks.

Pretty much every state has that. Called an elective share typically. You can't disinherit a spouse, absent a Prenup.

Yes, it is a community property state, which means the spouse has a right to 50%
