Was the wife also on the trust? Trusts will often say that property transferred to the trust retains its character as
community or separate property. It is also very possible that while he set that up, he did not fund the trust. People often do this. They make a trust, but don't put the house into it. Can be a big mistake.

Probably more to the story your friend doesn't understand. Pretty common for surviving spouse to get stuff.
