...who had been given the DC job at the beginning of the season. During that 4 game losing streak mid-season the D gave up an avg 41 pts a game and threatened a mutiny under Howell. Finally Bronco stepped in and sort of demoted/relieved Howell of some of his duties and kind of took back over the reigns to the D and calmed things down and got order restored.
That was an interesting season for sure. Our offense was fine they avg'd 37 pts a game under Taysom and 37 pts a game with Stewart at QB, it was the defense that kind of dropped the ball that year. It was BYU's highest scoring team in the Bronco era and also one of his worst defensively overall despite having some really talented players (9 of which went on to play in the NFL in later years). We also opened the season with several of our starting defensive unit suspended for a game for violating team rules in the off-season. Rather than do them all at once Bronco spread it out a guy here and a guy there over the first several games.
Our going 8-5 that year was 100% on the defense imo.
