I would love it if my coach came in fired up and said:
- We're better than these guys. A 1-pt halftime lead is embarassing
- We're bigger and stronger than these guys. At no time should they be pushing us around
- We're a family. Why are we letting them take cheap shots at our family?
- Here's what we're going to do to fix it. Right out of the half, we're going to take it to them, starting with #94. First play will be an outside run to #94's side, with 2 OL putting him on the ground. The play after that, we're going to line Wake in the slot and then have Wake crack #94. The play after that...
I'm not advocating for dirty play. But CCU was playing with an agressive mentality (i.e.: "We're going to push the boundaries until the refs step in") and BYU spent about 55 minutes of the game playing with a passive mentality (i.e.: "Did you see that ref? Where's the flag?!").
You can't count on the refs to fix things; you have to elevate the physicality of your play and set your own boundaries.
(We see the same thing in basketball, by the way; some guys respond to pressue by trying to bait a foul and then whine for a call, but winners go up strong and treat and-1s or foul calls as an afterthought)
