Most institutions have no reason to show a profit, though.
State schools, especially, probably plan to show no profit. They'll spend whatever you give them.
So just "profit" is a fuzzy measure. But subsidies are pretty clearly a sign you are a sinking financial ship.

This isn’t entirely the full story. Athletics has to cut checks to the various colleges. BYU’s tuition is dirt cheap
