Lots of schools choose football over academics...

They are just investing now to be a football school in the future, and less academics. As long as they're transparent about it, lots of people care more about being an alum of a school they're proud of in sports, than the rigor of the academics they receive. And they would be getting what they're paying for.

Eventually that investment could pay off, and they bring more money in from football than they spend.

Only about 30-35 teams make a profit each year. BYU is one of them.

This isn’t entirely the full story. Athletics has to cut checks to the various colleges. BYU’s tuition is dirt cheap
