was in the south stands
I remember the Game started with a BYU Kickoff return. I was probably 12 at the time. We were in the South Stands and I remember the BYU kickoff return man running all the way down field toward us. Great way to start the game. The noise issue, I think it started as a 1st and goal situation with AFA in the red zone, and the Cougar Defense backed up into the end zone. The South Stands crowd was going nuts, and Dowis started complaining to the Refs that it was too loud. BYU got a warning, but then they started giving penalties to BYU and moving 1/2 the distance to the goal line. I think they got like 2 or 3 penalties, until the ball was down to inches from the goal. Each time, it only made the crowd go crazier and get louder.

I distinctly remember after the first few warnings and penalties, the BYU defense would motion to the crowd to settle down as the teams started to get set. Mostly the crowd obliged and settled down a bit. But then as AFA got set, the Defensive Backs with their backs to the crowd would slyly reach around behind their backs and motion to the fans to pick up the noise. We were more than happy to oblige. Each time, as Dowis would start his count, the Dbacks would signal and the stands would erupt. Dowis would complain and get another penalty and get moved closer to the goal. The DBacks would settle us down again, and then when AFA started their count, BYU D backs would signal and we would go crazy again. Over and over.

Finally the refs forced them to play through it. I think mostly because the refs couldn't award them any more distance toward the goal line. If I remember, AFA tried 4 downs to get in from inches, and the Defense shut AFA down.
