No - it was a conscious decision that Bronco made. Not emotional detachment.
Bronco was asked about the penalties when he was defensive coordinator once as part of coordinator's corner - I remember listening to the interview and being surprised, knowing how much he preached being assignment sound, disciplined, and responsible to the team. I'm going to mess up the words he used - so know these are all mine. I'm just trying to express the essence of what he said.

Bronco essentially he said that he wanted his players playing with an aggressive edge. He didn't want them second guessing themselves or thinking too much - he wanted them playing a physically violent game with physical violence. He'd rather have them be too aggressive than not aggressive enough - so he didn't really want to tone that down in their play.

So to Bronco - the discipline came in doing your assignment and trusting your teammate to do his. This is particularly important with Bronco's 3-3-5 - where who is rushing and who is in coverage can change from play to play and you have to trust each person to do their job. But the discipline didn't stop them from playing on the edge within those expectations.

This has been his approach from the beginning of his time at BYU - during the very first spring camp when Bronco was DC there were stories of fights breaking out in 7 on 7 passing drills and scrimmages - because when players were not in pads and were supposed to be "thud" tackling (just bumping or grabbing, but not hitting or taking to the ground) Bronco's defenders were much more physical than the offensive players appreciated - often knocking them down and hitting them hard instead of just bumping them.

This isn't Bronco not knowing how to coach or being unsure how to teach it. This is Bronco wanting physically aggressive and violent players playing on the edge to have an advantage in the game by not second guessing if they should hit or pull up.
