totality of data do not support the "dirty" label. See linked message below.
Based on the only honest attempt at collecting unbiased data on the subject, BYU comes in at #37 on "dirtiest" team from 2003 to 2012, all years when Bronco was coach, the first two as DC. Is the reputation because people expect BYU to be lower on the list?
Note that Utah (#8) and USU were both "dirtier" during the same timeframe.
And my eye rolls are because people keep repeating the lie when there is no objective evidence to back it up.
Perhaps the sweetest self-own I've ever witnessed was at the 2015 Vegas Bowl against Utah when early in the game there were offsetting personal fouls against a Ute player and Tejan Koroma. The chant of "dirty, dirty" came from the Ute sections, never mind that their guy was also involved. Then, later in the game the same Ute player gets called for another PI for unnecessary roughness against Linehan on a punt, and gets ejected. The Ute section was silent while the BYU section got to chant "dirty, dirty". It was awesome, but was also a microcosm of the false "dirty" narrative against BYU perpetuated mostly by Utah fans.
