Agree it was public perception, mostly due to the constant repetition of the lie
and then people could google the Ului punch or the Miami Beach brawl and believe the perception was earned.

Public perception is powerful, but usually wrong. It reminds me of the perception today among some that the police are out to kill African Americans. You can hear that and then google plenty of unfortunate cases where this has happened, but when you look at the totality of the data, it just isn't true.
