My Personal Argument: Cancer
My best argument isn’t an argument on the medical aspect because I’m not a doctor. But I’ve spoken with lots about this. Because I have cancer. And I’ve now met a lot of people with cancer. Fun club to be in.

As a result, I have no immune system for some time. And because my kids could be in your kids’ classes at school (or others that share this view), I’ve been advised by my oncologist (part of the team at the US’ top cancer center) to have my kids avoid schools for this very reason—so they don’t saunter in with asymptomatic covid they picked up at school when I give them a hug. So my kids are involuntarily homeschooled as we choose between two incredibly poor options, hoping and praying this gets approved and people elect to have their kids vaccinated. It figuratively kills me to tell them they can’t have the birthday parties, friends, school that I want for them so that we decrease the chance that not doing so literally kills me.

Not trying to be an alarmist here, nor trying to shame anyone into taking action. I’m not even arguing that there is a moral imperative or expectation to lift a finger to help another if you feel it’s dangerous for you or your kids. But I’d say what I haven’t been willing to say to all of those who have been so kind in asking how they can help us during this time: “your meals and get well cards are lovely and thoughtful, but I’d trade them for you getting the shot so I can give my family a bit more of what we really want—to leave isolation.”
