Thank you for a rational Tuiaki post...
The defensive coaching staff isn't clueless, nor are they as inept as the most ignorant and vocal Tuiaki haters would have everyone believe.

Do they make mistakes, of course. Could they be better at times, definitely. Would we all love to see some super creative, ultra exciting, high pressure, blitz and stunt heavy defense that creates sacks, TFLs and 3 and outs every drive, sure!

But the reality is that 1) you need to have enough talented and healthy personnel to pull it off, and 2) that vocal minority within the fanbase needs to be football literate enough to know and recognize it when it's being called.

Ideally, good coaches with great players could make opportunistic and situational adjustments on the fly. So granted, long opponent drives while seeing the team in a drop 8 the entire drive can be frustrating, no doubt. Same with hockey style subbing of the starters, players not knowing where the sticks are at, missed tackles, etc.

But the reality is that many of the biggest defensive plays and stops, and turnovers in particular, have come in the drop 8 defense.

Fans are gonna fan, and there will be good ones and bad in every fanbase, ours notwithstanding. And I'm glad that we show up like we do and care!

As with politics and religion, I respect those with a differing opinions. I just wish, as I'm sure the coaches do, that there would at least be a somewhat standard level of education and understanding of the criticized topics before spouting off, calling for jobs or making personal attacks on the team or the coaches.

I love Kalani. I appreciate him, as I did Bronco. I think that Kalani is exactly what BYU needs, and we'll be fortunate to keep him around. I think he has handled the ignorant vocal minority much better than Bronco, and while I think that money does have a lot to do with employment decisions, at some levels more money is just gravy. And family, loyalty and a greater purpose can be even more enticing and rewarding.

But for a coach at BYU, that's also assuming that you, your staff and (heaven for bid) your family members don't have to deal with excessive negativity from many that would seemingly act and aspire to be better than the average fans of some other "Blank the Mormons" type institutions and fanbases.

I think that vocal minority ultimately wore Bronco and his family down, and they've insinuated as much on occasions, so I certainly hope that doesn't happen with Kalani and his staff.

Besides, I've never understood who those folks think BYU is realistically going to hire? With the obvious institutional restrictions and expectations, I think that we're blessed and lucky to have the coaches that we have at BYU.

Thank you, Coaches! Great season and GO COUGS!
