Don't be too hard on the professors. A situation like that isn't specific to the
professor's class or their assignments, and applies to the kid's entire set of courses. So, a solution at the college or university level would seem more appropriate than trying to wrangle 5 different professors to all come up with the same solution.

Also, a professor not giving your nephew all he is asking for isn't requiring your nephew to read the textbook when he should be resting his eye. That professor is just laying out the consequences, and your nephew is then free to choose for himself what to do (he should choose to rest his eye). That's not entirely unreasonable of the professor, even if you and I don't agree with the terms they are setting.

It also gets dicey if Professor A offers an Incomplete, because then the student can say, "Professor A is giving me an Incomplete, why don't you?" Professor A doesn't want to be played like that with his colleagues. It's much easier if all 5 professors get an email from above that says what is happening with the student and what steps they should take.

In any event, I agree with the post above that an Incomplete grade would be the right outcome, especially this late in the term (I might feel differently if this happened in the 2nd week of the term).
