In fairness, it also worked for them having teams play different # of conference games, don't think that's good longterm
Lots of things about that season were an anomaly and not long-term sustainable.

Imagine an alternate 2021 where Big 12 expansion already happened, so BYU from last year plays Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Baylor, Houston, Cincy, Iowa St, Kansas St and Texas in conference.

Or an alternate 2021 where BYU plays Texas, Kansas, TCU, Texas Tech, UCF, West Virginia, Iowa St and Kansas St

Pretty sure there'd be a meaningful disparity in records.
