By that metric, BYU also isn't a national brand - very few are

Being in the Air Force and moving around I've lived in North Texas (Panhandle), Utah, Colorado, Ohio, California, Germany, Colorado again, and Georgia.

I can tell you that when I go to sports stores in Georgia (or any of those non-Utah locations) I don't see BYU gear or memorabilia. Georgia and Georgia Tech obviously and then also Alabama, USC, Ohio St, Texas, Florida, maybe a few others, but that's about it. Same story in Ohio or California. Germany obviously doesn't really have any, and Colorado had a bit of both BYU and Utah.
