The issue right now is teachers being sick and there not being enough subs to cover all the classes. At our high school
last week we had a bunch of classes that weren’t covered at all with a substitute.
The only option was to require teachers who were there that day during their prep period to teach those classes.
When you don’t get a prep period because you’re covering extra classes, that extra hour will help them to get ready for the next day.
Without it they either are required to stay late or take it home. Which leads to “teacher burnout.”
It’s a crappy time to be a teacher right now. Nobody could have predicted this.
