The school-as-day-care thing is a societal issue (and benefit).
My wife doesn't work, and I consider that the most "Priveleged" thing about my life (not that I'm otherwise unusually privileged, but my wife not needing to work is really a big thing, IMO).

I get that many, many families rely on two working parents to live well. And the fact that it is possible because their kids are in school 8ish hours a day isn't a bad thing. I don't think our education system should be built around that, but we should acknowledge that canceling or modifying school has a big affect on parents, particularly those where both parents work.
