I have a speech that my kids all know by heart (5 currently all in their 20s):
“Between the ages of around 14 and 24, a child goes from complete financial dependence to complete financial independence. It’s a gradual process, with adjustments and changes every year. And, it’s different for each child, depending on his or her needs, abilities and situation….”

They know that each year we’ll have a discussion about what ELSE they will need to start paying for.

If the topic of who’s paying for something comes up, all I have to say is, “Between the ages…” and I get a good-natured eye roll and/or sigh, and a serious but cordial financial discussion ensues. It’s been great and all my kids are fiscally responsible, and no student loan debt that I’m aware of.
