Have you been able to get him to share why? What comes to my mind (entirely empirically based on working with kids that
age all day every day but in a different non-educational setting) are: bullying or a mental challenge (anxiety, OCD, depression, etc).
The first can be helped with some coaching, the second with good therapy (which I used to not think much of but have come to learn I was mistaken).
