My son was similar and is on the spectrum. His social life slowly gained
momentum as he started getting involved in non-sporting extracurricular activities (e.g., student government, year book, etc.)

Not every activity/organization/extracurricular was great but they all forced him to practice his social skills.

Also, hitting puberty, getting his braces off, and getting contacts was huge for him, almost too good. He got a bit cocky.
