I clung to hope for Kalani but at the end of last year I flipped and was in the
camp of replacing him as well. I agree with the idea that at some point the HC has to be accountable for those on his staff, and he had covered up for way too long. I was ready to simply start over, and I’m not one who typically thinks that a head coaching change is a magic elixir to solve problems. But I felt we had seen the same issues plaguing the program for long enough that my confidence in anything changing was near zero.

Kalani knew he was flirting with disaster by keeping Tuiaki and finally moved on from him, but he couldn’t have waited a minute longer without jeopardizing his own career, and even then he was tempting fate.

I am optimistic that the overhaul on the defensive side will bring a spark that has been severely lacking for a long time. By all accounts it seems like things are moving in the right direction but ultimately what shows up on the field will be the proof, for better or worse.
