One person's perspective:
I appreciate all that you do. I think you are doing great work for student athletes and for BYU. I think you do a great job using the money you get for the best possible uses.

I am, however, not a subscriber. Why? Because I have yet to get past double paying for the same thing. I pay to go athletic endeavors. I pay to fly out and then to pay for tickets that are no longer cheap. I subscribe to ESPN+, ESPN, Fox and others to watch BYU play. Because of these sources BYU will be making North of $50 million per year.

Why then should I pay the athletes additional funds?

Name, image, likeness was never supposed to be collectives. It was for players to be able to take advantage of their skill and fame (for example signing autographs or being a spokesperson for a product).

I'm not adverse to pay for play. But in that model the pay will come from the University that is collecting the money.

So I have an adverse reaction to having to pay to watch the players and then pay again to get the players. I do understand in the current environment this is how it is done and this is what it takes to compete, I just don't like it. I have paid money to BYU players for autographs and whatnot (overpaid is probably a better way to put it). I just haven't fully embraced paying guys for nothing other than playing football/basketball.

Then to complicate things even more you have situations like Marcus Adams. BYU rallied around Marcus and paid quite a bit for him and his family after the tragedy of losing his father. But then just a few weeks later Marcus is leaving (and for what it sounds like are very good reasons). But it just furthers the question of what am I paying for. In Marcus's situation it was nothing on the court.

Again I don't blame him for transferring, family trumps all. But it makes me want to run and hide from paying money to transfers. They need not have any loyalty to BYU.

Almost every young man would love to go to college to play football or basketball and get free tuition, room and board and a stipend.

Yet here we are asking people to donate money to make them wealthy. It seems crazy, and yet you need to do it to compete.
