I got the impression he was talking about athletes on the pro level...
Not rank and file Mormon kids playing 9 year old soccer.

As I said previously on here we've tried to avoid Sunday play for my kids as they've grown up, in fact we pretty much completely avoided it, but if any of my kids turn out to be capable of playing at a higher level, college or pro, and it required Sunday play then that is what they would do. The only option to avoid Sunday play for a college athlete is BYU, all the rest play on Sunday's, so unless you're one of the few athletes that gets a scholarship to BYU then you're going to have to play on Sunday at some point in your college career. I suppose if a kid could make an agreement with a college coach that recruited him/her not to have to play on Sunday then they could avoid it but that would probably be a very rare thing, most coaches aren't going to agree to let a player sit out an Elite 8 game if it's on a Sunday.

Then of course if they happen to be good enough to be a pro athlete they will simply have to play on Sunday's, unless it is a very rare and extreme situation. Just how it is although to me if you are a pro athlete required to play on a Sunday it is no different than if you work at KSL TV, the churches own TV station, and you're required to work on Sunday. It's your job, you have to do it. Sure you can be like Eli Herring and decline to take the job but I'm guessing no one is being penalized for working at KSL on Sunday because it is understood they have to. Also no one expects them to refuse to take the job at KSL because it requires Sunday work.

I think there is plenty of room in the atonement to accommodate having to work on Sunday.
