Not making it to church because they choose to play sports on Sunday...
is one thing, but not being able to make it to church or mutual activities is another one completely. Our kids are inundated with church "activities" including mutual etc. Not only do they have their Sunday block of meetings, they also have their own leadership meetings, seminary all week, temple trips, service projects, scout camps, Helaman's camp, combined young men's young women's stuff, fast offering collection, sacrament preparation, home teaching, and the list goes on and on.

Those are not reasons to keep your kids out of sports IMO. Growing up my dad made me miss every single Tuesday baseball game, or other sports game, I had because of primary. In my opinion that is wrong. Kids need to be able to play and compete, it's important for them, and we shouldn't deny them the opportunities because any one of thousands of church activities might happen. Church is now an almost everyday thing, there is no shortage of opportunities for a kid to be involved in some sort of church activity, that is for sure. Let them play sports. If the choice is to not play on Sunday I can respect that, absolutely, but if you're not letting them do it because it interferes with mutual then you're being far to strict IMO.
