My MD brother and DO brother-in-law have both said that MD schools are tougher to get in to (the DO BIL wanted to do MD programs but his lower MCAT scores kept him out) and generally better equip students to get into a better residency. That said, if you work hard at either you can go far. While my bro is finishing year 5 of his ENT program at his top choice residency program and will do a facial plastics fellowship next year at his location of choice, my BIL is at his top choice GI fellowship program right now.

Just don't try to placate yourself by rationalizing. DO and MD are similar just as BYU and BYU-Idaho are; but both are very different as well...and the BYU-I/DO little brother attitude isn't very becoming.
