residency. I would like to think that I have a little bit more insight on the medical educational landscape than a 1st year medical student.
First, I went back east for school because, although region was important to me, I realized that at a DO school, the battle for a good residency or a competitive specialty would be infinitely harder (something you obviously didn't consider). While technically DOs have access to MD residencies, you've essentially shut the door on half of the more competitive specialties just because you're a DO. You have signed up for a race with a broken leg. In order to match in anything other than primary care, you are going to have to go above and beyond what your MD competitors are doing when it comes to research, grades, and board scores, because all things being equal, residencies pick the MD candidate 10 times out of 10. In fact, in the specialty I am applying to, one can determine how competitive a program is by the number of DOs that they take...the more the DOs, the less competitive the program is.
Anyway, since the poor decision has already been made, you'd better at least make the best of it and come out of there married...
