For the most part, the athletic departments are dwarfed by endowments for actual academics. Studies indicate there is no correlation between donors for athletic departments and donors for actual academics. I imagine there is some cross-over, but not that much.

There are no shareholders per se and thus nobody but the coaches and ADs "profit" from the relationship.
