you are looking at a D line and front seven that should be able to get after the QB on every down. I know it takes a special type of player to do that such as Haloti Ngata or Star Lotoleilei, but these are guys that BYU should be in the running for every year. Get one of these guys every 3-4 years and then your defense can be special because they create havoc by demanding double teams. Right now BYU is playing space holders at all three positions and just trying to control gaps. When their lineman start dominating gaps then the 3-4 becomes a whole different animal. The best example for BYU recently has been Manu. He was better than just serviceable. He occupied space and made plays from his position. I would be happy to just to get some players of his caliber.
