BYU spent half of its scholarships on Utah HS recruits. That is far too many. Anytime BYU has tried that, it has missed on available talent (that happened during LaVell's last couple of years and Crowton was left scrambling after his first year). Fortunately, with the return of Anae, the BYU recruiting focus is broader and last year was a much better recruiting class. Let's hope BYU can do it again this year. At least, they can tell recruits who want to play immediately that they have a legit shot at playing time for most positions.
The recruiting gap is further evident on the OL where BYU has three frosh starting and a walk on soph, along with a JC transfer. Where are the big tough hogs that BYU was supposed to recruit over the last 5 years on the OL, all sitting on the bench behind freshmen.
