You pegged some things but I think the one big flaw with his approach is...
...he churns through and wastes a lot of players to find the one or two diamonds in the rough that he loves. One thing to his credit is he has (prior to this year) been able to make do with serviceable DL players and even managed to have decent defenses with a very undersized Russell Tialavea at the NT position.

The flip side of that though is the annual lack of depth along the DL has forced him to waste some guys by using them out of position. For instance Jan Jorgenson tried to bulk up to better fit into Bronco's vision of a 3-4 DE and what they needed to do and he went from a 14 sack, 20 tfl 77 tackle season as a soph to 5 sacks and 8.5 tfls and 6 sacks and 10 tfls the next 2 seasons. That 2007 season he was a monster on defense, though.

When I compare the two models of approach between Kyle and Bronco when it comes to recruiting, I like the emphasis Kyle puts on getting good OL's and DL's over Bronco's. Generally during their winning streak vs BYU they've done a good job of controlling the point of attack and managed to pressure our QB's into having bad games (I think the best job a BYU QB has done vs Utah since John Beck was the 2010 game with Jake Heaps) and we can't get to their QB's and they pick us apart with short, pin-point passes and then burn us once or twice a game deep with big plays.

Bronco seems content on getting anybody with a pulse and standing them there and calling it good, yet he almost never runs short of good linebackers or safeties. If he would hold that same standard and determination to get really good OLs and DLs instead of being willing to take anyone there, he wouldn't be in the mess he's been in the past 4 seasons and he wouldn't be putting his players through this turmoil nor the fans.
