There are obviously a lot of things that went in to it
Many of which are mentioned above. Poor pr skills eventually was the huge anchor that did him in. At the time the Utah media was in love with Majerus, who had a lot of one liners and RR was anything but funny. They could find no fault in Saint Rick and tore RR apart at any chance. This spilled over in to public perception and eventually recruiting. Things slowly unraveled and when his best player was arrested and the rest of the cupboard was bare (including an empty Marriott center) he was gone.
Interesting to see what would have happened if the media was already out of love with Majerus and RR would have taken some be nice pills.
