The issue is that BYU wanted him, he is LDS, and he picked Utah over BYU. When
Utah joined the PAC, I said the new question was how many LDS kids would pick Utah over BYU.
It used to be a no-brainer - BYU was the better program, higher profile, better path to the NFL and more LDS than Utah.
Now Utah is arguably the better, high-profile program in an elite conference, a better path to the NFL, and you can still have some LDS influence, serve a mission, etc.
I think for an LDS kid with NFL aspirations it comes down to one question, "What is more important to you, LDS environment or the NFL?".
Covey picked the NFL, and is unlikely to ever get there. Langi picked LDS environment.
The fear people are having is that there will be many more Coveys moving forward.
