I agree with you the home schedule is improving, BUT it is no where near what Utah's is year in and year out. BYU does not have a consistently strong home schedule. Sure we get a few good teams to come to Provo but it is not like a P5 schedule.
This years home schedule is horrid.
Next year's is improved (not PAC 12 level) - UCLA, Miss State
2017 similar story (worse than 2016, depending how the quality of teams shake out) - Utah, Boise
2018 - Bad home schedule - Cal
2019 - Great year for us - USC, UW, Wisconsin - solid but still on par with a PAC 12 (or worse) Utah's will be very similar to better
2020 - Michigan State, Missouri, UVA - potential to be solid (still not PAC 12)
Much improved from prior years but still not comparable to Utah's or other PAC 12 schedules. Some years BYU's may host a competitive field vs Utah but there are no clear cut years it is better. Utah has many/most years where its schedule appears to be better. 2019 is solid, 2020 could be solid but TBD and the other years just don't compete.
Additionally, Utah's games are in a conference and mean more. BYU loses one and their fate is sealed. Utah had conference standings and bowl game seeding to play for. Being in a P5 conference is key. BYU can look to be like ND, but unfortunately we will never be ND........but if things move in the right direction would could join a P5 conference down the road.
