I think you are misunderstanding the point.
The point being BYU needs to have such a strong schedule to make up for lack of being in a P5 conference. End of story. The schedule is not to that point, there is no consistency in strength and a few solid games do not make up for it. Sure once in a while BYU will have a tougher SoS, but it is not the same....especially when the top competition is not consistently coming to Provo.
To your earlier analogy.....I would love BYU to be the baby bird waiting the conference for big time games year in and year out. There would be little need to play big time teams (maybe 1 every year to every other year) given we would already have a strong schedule and would only have a few slots to fill. Not a bad deal......
