Doesn't have to be huge advantage. Just has to negate a disadvantage.
If there were enough solid independents that the top two met in a championship game it would largely negate the "well they didn't play a championship game" risk.
Notre Dame could remain independen, with the national schedule that allows without sacrificing the chance to make the top 4 based on technicality. And chances are, their opponent would be fairly close to the weaker opponent in many of the P5 championships.
