very different (iirc)...
...the Mtn Network was sold to BYU and others with the "idea" that there would be an extensive national distribution of games across many systems like DirectTV, the Dish, cable partners, etc. Also, BYU was promised initially that they would be allowed to retain their 3rd tier rights and rebroadcast their own games. BYU officials trusted Thompson and the MWC that they would retain their rebroadcast rights. Shortly after this agreement BYU broke ground on their HD Broadcasting Facility and launched BYUtv with the idea that BYU sports would be a principle source of content.

Soon after the Mtn launched, a new partner was brought on board (CBS) after repeated failed attempts at getting the satellite companies to buy in and the Mtn Network got shuttled off to the hard to find CBS Sports Network with occasional games on channels like Roots, etc. The new partner didn't want to honor the agreement MWC officials had made with BYU regarding their rebroadcast rights and hosed BYU. Thompson and the MWC just let it happen.

The Mtn Network had next to nothing in place up front, Netflix basically put a multi-billion dollar company like Blockbuster Video out of business and now has their sites set on even bigger fish, the Cable TV industry. It's only a matter of time before they buckle too.
