And it's not the level of the recruits so much as the type of recruits
If you want to land surprises you have to aim for speed & athlecism, & coach the skill.

Overstockpiling at certain positions ain't gonna lead to more surprises either.

This being said, much of Bronco's recruiting problems involve the Honor Code. I'm encouraged by our last signing class that involved at least four non-LDSs athletic types that need to grow &/or develop into their positions. 2 OL & 2 DBs. This has not been the hallmark of Bronco's recruiting classes, & it's a big reason, I think, why we just don't see many of our 2 & 3 star recruits develop into NFL athletes. If guys are high-end recruits because of skill, size, &/or instincts those things without athleticism & speed ain't gonna get them into the league. We have way too many of our recruits fall into that category. They may make good collegiate players, & so we can't stop recruiting those types--but they can't be making up 90% of every signing class, either. They should be more like 40% of the class, probably.

For BYU, though, aiming for that kind of a percentage might mean 60% of your class never play more than a year. As much as I might gripe about Bronco's recruits, its taken him years to establish a working culture in his locker room. One that holds onto its players. And for that I admire him. BYU HC is not an easy job at all to establish balance & stability & WINNING. Reality of it is, this is far more a BYU than a Bronco problem.
